Holiday Outfits with a Black Jumpsuit
You may remember this jumpsuit from How to style a black jumpsuit post where my photo companion was a Rolls Royce. The jury's still out on whether that car upstaged me or not. With cooler weather comes new outfit challenges. I have default looks for the holiday season but sometimes you want to mix it up. Layers, using pieces and jewelry unexpectedly are a great way to come up with new and exciting outfit combos. This jumpsuit is great as a utilitarian and minimalist staple but can you dress it up for special occasions and have strangers stare at your outfit incomprehensively? Scroll down for the answer.
Stripes and jewels
Having a huge swath of your outfit being black is a great canvas for a statement jewelry and subtle sparkle all over. I choose this necklace from LOFT for some sparkle that isn't overwhelming. The red socks also sparkle in real life but not as brightly here. This is a great outfit for occasions that call for a more demure outfit without being stuffy or boring. Also appropriate for an office party where you don't want to show even a sliver of skin to creepy coworkers or their spouses.
Plaid is great as a stand out piece and that is the rule for this outfit. This belt did not start its life as one. It came from humble beginnings as a plaid skirt bought for Halloween in high school and then wasted away in the bottom drawer of my dresser. Then by inspiration or divine intervention, Project Runway is a great show to get your creative juices flowing, I remembered the skirt and wanted to breathe new life into it. So I rummaged through my clothes and cut off the bottom layers to make a statement corset belt. These probably aren't trending anymore but my new belt will get more wear than the tiny skirt not worn in a decade. That's the beauty of DIY. Making something old new again in a different iteration.
Back to the outfit, would you have known this awesome new belt used to be a skirt if I didn't tell you? Yeah, that's what I thought. But transparency is important and I didn't want anyone to think I magically found this belt in a store and just didn't want to tell you where. So now you know. Will this belt trick people into thinking you aren't wearing a jumpsuit? Sure. The plaid belt hides the connection in plain sight. I would also put this over any neutral colored tops for a pop of color, white sweaters, black button downs or go crazy and pair with more red! It is the color of the holidays and still trending for the foreseeable future.
I finally finished my free PDF with all of my outfits featuring red boots. I added it to the original post Holiday Outfits with Red Boots but if you are lazy or already read it the button is below. Enjoy!
