Material Box From Material World Review

Material Box From Material World Review

I tried out the Material Box, a new box filled with vintage designer treasures, from Material World and loved it! For the vintage lovers always on the hunt this is a must try.

In an ideal world I would spend hours digging through vintage inventory, online or in person, looking for one of a kind vintage finds. There are a couple things stopping me. One: no one will pay me to do this and two: even though shopping in the real world is fun online shopping usually wins since it is faster and easier. When scrolling through my Instagram I saw an ad, very well targeted Zuckerberg, about a style box that would send me vintage designer clothes. Intrigued I clicked. You only pay for the pieces you keep and the $20 styling fee is waived. If you luck out and love everything you get 20% off your total. With nothing stopping me but the speed of my phone typing I was in.

I filled out the style questions twice, user error, and submitted. It covered everything from sizing, your personal style and what pieces you would really like to receive. Everything was really simple and I couldn't wait for my first box to arrive. Is there anything better than having someone who knows your style vintage shop for you? The idea is totally genius. It was also exciting because I had no idea what was coming in the mail. The element of surprise was exhilarating.

In my box, which I got a few days later, I received 3 tops, 1 hair accesory and a pair of pants. I break down the details below.

The Favorites

This two toned, grey and blue, button down shirt looked too small when I originally opened it up but I realized it was a cropped style and not a child's shirt, thankfully. It was going to have to be pretty ill fitting, not flattering or a terrible scratchy fabric for me to not like it. So naturally I'm probably keeping it.

Two colors = Double the fun!

Try to think of the most unlikely combination of fabric and silhouette. I'll wait. Did you come up with wind breaker blazer? Because that's what I got and it is kind of amazing. I tried it on thinking, “There is no way I'm going to keep this but I should see how it fits.” Then realizing even the wind breaker material makes it more casual compare to the vintage grey blazer and can be worn with a multitude of things either dressing them up or down. Versatility is my Achilles heel so that sealed the deal for me. Also it's navy with black lining so if you roll up the sleeves you have black cuffs. For the rest of the night I wore this blazer unable or unwilling to take it off until necessary, showering and sleeping.

The Pants

I'm not really into chinos or the color of these pants. So they already had two strikes against them. They are also too small and too short for me. So because of all these unfortunate characteristics they were a no. Sorry pants!

It's not you it's me, pants. Actually it's you.

The Striped Top

I was initially very excited about this top because of the stripes, in my style questions and answers page I said I would love anything striped, then befuddled when trying to figure out how to put it on. I tried layering it with other pieces but the neck straps were a bit too much for me. The fabric is soft and breathable perfect for a scorching summer day in the near future. If it was just an off the shoulder top minus the neck straps I probably would have kept it.

Leather Headband

Another combination I never thought I would see, the leather headband. I like headbands in theory. In practice they always squeeze my head too fiercely causing a headache and I toss them off my head within minutes. This one I'm sure would create a good look for someone with a smaller head but for me, my melon is too big.

Cool in theory but too tight in reality.

The return process was also easy. They provide a bag and prepaid sticker for any items you don't want which you drop off at your nearest UPS within 4 business days.

The quality of the items were very good. They all seemed to barely ever been worn or very well taken care of by their previous owners. Even though I had to return some items I love the idea and since style is so objective I was pleasantly surprised that I liked anything I received. Overall I was really happy with the process and the products.

Here is how I styled my two favorites pieces in Material Box from Material World Outfits.
