I Used Acid as My Deodorant
With so many natural and alternative deodorants out there why not try a BHA or another acid made for your face. If you're skeptical read on for my experience using acid as my deodorant for a week.
As a self professed podcast junkie I download them with abandon but only subscribe to the lucky few I couldn't imagine not listening to weekly. Forever 35 is the latter. The friendly banter between the hosts Doree and Kate about all things beauty, lots of other topics too, is the best kind of conversation; informative and enjoyable. The Facebook group takes it to the next level.
As someone who signed up for “The Facebook” when it was a cool secret whispered between college kids, I don't really scroll through it much anymore. Now I have a renewed reason to scroll. To find answers to questions other members are asking or to chime in with my own recommendations. This is where I found the article from Racked about using acids as deodorants. The idea was shocking and seemed to good to be true. But I clicked anyway. I'm an investigator at heart.
There are many reasons to use alternative or natural forms of deodorant namely, aluminum, effectiveness, not wanting your white shirts turning yellow anymore (me!). I haven't been completely satisfied with any of my options yet. I tried out Native deodorant a few months ago. It has so many good reviews! Coupled with a pervasive online presence stalking me from my work computer to my house! What could go wrong? I'm not sure if the scent I purchased, coconut and vanilla, is to blame or it just doesn't work for me but I felt self conscious about the way I smelled while using it.
I was on the prowl for a new deodorant that would keep the integrity of my white shirt underarms. It turns out I could use something I already owned in a new way. The power of the internet! I've used a BHA on my face for a couple of years now and it significantly improved my skin's texture and kept my pores clear. If you have combination skin that easily gets clogged like mine I highly recommend a BHA. Paula's Choice is the queen of BHA's so I would start there. I use the 1% BHA on my face every night and when my skin is extra unruly I will spot treat with 2% BHA. Since I don't use the 2% on the regular my good sized bottle is pretty full. It was the perfect candidate for this alternative deodorant experiment with acids.
In the Racked article The Best Natural Deodorant is Acid by Tracy E. Robey several different people tried this new method with varying levels of success. They all tried different acids so definitely experiment with any acids, for your face or body, laying around your bathroom. This method doesn't stop you from sweating completely, just keeps your sweat from smelling bad. I had no guarantees but plenty of excitement. The worst that could happen is I smelled not the best for one day. Watch out coworkers, family and friends. I'm experimenting with new deodorants. I also tried this out in the winter which means I wasn't sweating profusely.
After a long day in the office I smelled my pits and they smelled like nothing. Literally, nothing. A miracle! I didn't miss the fragrant aroma emanating from my underarms even though this has been a mainstay of my life since the young teen years. Now the only source of fragrance wafting from me is shampoo and conditioner. After working out in the evening a little bit of a smell came creeping in but nothing compared to going without deodorant. So the real test will be when summer rolls around and we see how this method fares against the Texas heat. Fingers crossed.
Another upside of this method is if you are lazy or don't shower every day on the weekend, guilty!, I left this on overnight and the next day still had underarms that didn't smell. With any other deodorant method the second day test is usually a wash, aluminum free or not. I haven't had any weird skin issues yet so we'll see how this method holds up long term but so far I love it! It's like having a great piece in your wardrobe that goes with everything except this one goes on your skin. I'm going to stick with this method as long as my skin stays happy and my pits stay fresh.
