New Year New Podcasts

New Year New Podcasts

Currently basking in the long awaited winter break where my work is slow and my mind can wander. The only problem is I get bored; really easily. There are only so many websites to browse in a day and thoughtful activities to keep me occupied. So I dove into some new podcasts. I'm always open to listening to new people with new insights or stories. Most of these podcasts were recommended by other podcasts (podcast-ception) and others I fell into by accident. For a deeper dive into what podcasts I've cultivated through the years revisit Podcasts for Undercover Adults and What I Have Discovered This Year.

The Slowdown with Tracy K Smith

Recommended by an Electric Lit article this podcast is short, sweet and to the point; a poem a day. Most episodes fall around the 5 minute mark and are read by the soothing voice of poet laureate Tracy K Smith. My favorite poem from the past week is Which I Be a Doe & You, by Effect, Are a Wolf by Danez Smith. I enjoy poems that speak to inner feelings and desires not easily expressed but still valid. I also use this podcast as a way to relax during my lunch break by listening before I start eating.

Armchair Expert with Dax Shepard

This is not a new or unknown podcast but is new to me. I mostly know Dax Shepard as the spouse of Kristen Bell and not much else. I've seen him in movies but he usually seems to be laying low. From the types of movies he's worked in I was surprised by his depth of knowledge and interest in a variety of subjects. His curiosity is infectious and reminds me to question and seek out new ways of viewing situations and questioning my own biases. Episodes range from an hour and a half to two but there are so few lulls in the conversation I'm always surprised when its over. Dax is great at not over generalizing things he believes because it is coming from his very niche perspective.

This podcast reminds me of Not Too Deep with Grace Helbig because Armchair Expert always goes really deep even when they try not to. Some highlights I’ve listened to from the past week are Ted Danson’s childhood upbringing, Sarah Silverman not being that dirty IRL and the founder of Charity Water, Scott Harrison, having one hell of a backstory. Monica Padman is great at keeping Dax in check when needed and not agreeing with everything he says which makes for great conversations without the echo chamber effect.

The Moth Radio Hour

People telling stories for entertainment isn't revolutionary until you listen to them on a podcast in your car and laugh hysterically scaring other unsuspecting passengers. I've only listened to two full length episodes but I'm ready for more. I've related to every speaker even if we are totally different or not. The most recent episode about hospice care for the speakers sister I found relatable. It was more about family dysfunction, dynamics and expectations than death. I smiled more than feeling sad.

Have a great weekend catching up on podcasts and look out for the super blood wolf moon on Sunday night! 🌙
