How to Style Suit Separates

How to Style Suit Separates

It all started with a vintage grey blazer and now has progressed to trousers. All the details about my winding path to blazer glory can be found in my last post. Here I show you how to style suit separates that aren't boring or expected.

Until the recent avalanche of street style images constantly bombarding me since last September I didn't think suit separates, blazers and trousers, could be cool. They always seemed too stuffy, boring, corporate or uncomfortable. They were labeled as "safe" domain I characterize by people wearing these types of clothes every day so they don't have to think too hard in the morning aka the uniform dressing trend before it was cool. Then I found some trousers I actually liked that wouldn't be relegated to the back of my closet for interview only attire. My outfit freedom for work is so far still intact since I am buying these pieces for fashion purposes instead of dress code ones. This week I added some Topshop pants into the mix and figured a couple outfits were in order.

I like using a blazer to elevate an otherwise comfy and slightly basic outfit. The top half feels quintessentially French Girl to me. My affinity for all things striped and monochrome makes me a full fledged purveyor of the look without too much effort. To keep it from looking too business-y I wore leggings and my trusty Vans. Another name for this look could be business on top sporty on the bottom. Sporty Business? I like to imagine this is how people dress at athletic wear companies. A great outfit for Skyping if I've ever seen one. I got these earrings through Reformation made by Soko and I'm proving they go with everything with these two outfits. They are a certain type of earring I'm currently obsessed with which is the alternative hoop. They still dangle but the hoop is modified or in a different place.

Tomboy Trousers

Like the recent Man Repeller article about being bored with jeans when forced by the weather to mostly wear pants or leggings every day, dressing can get stagnant or boring. So with no real plan in mind I subconsciously started searching out alternative pants. I landed on Topshop because they were having a huge sale a couple of weeks ago and my delayed response in committing (ordering) left me sans two printed pairs of trousers. Shopping FOMO is the worst. I know now this was a blessing in disguise since one of these pants wouldn't have fit according to Topshop sizing. Thank you universe!

Inspired by my desire to get rid of my super boring black interview pants I found these Topshop beauties during the Nordstrom sale. I'm always anxious when ordering pants online because the sizing is so varied across brands and companies. So I always double, triple check my measurements to the size I want to order, cross my fingers and hope for the best. These were a rare find that worked perfectly right out of the box.

Who says tomboy looks can't lean a little bit dressed up? I eschewed the easy minimalism with these pants, tucked in neutral colored top, and went with my favorite go to vintage tee. I kept the Vans and Soko earrings because they seemed like a natural fit. Add a high pony because this is more casual than business and you are rocking the slightly dressed up tomboy look!
