How to Style a Maxi Dress in the Winter

How to Style a Maxi Dress in the Winter

This seems counter intuitive, maxi dress in the winter, but hear me out. Maxi dresses are just another layer you can add for some extra color or movement. Mine doesn't add much warmth but tis the season for layering. I styled a couple looks with the same Reformation floral maxi dress in Reformation Redux only 6 months ago. Since those were for summer they were less about layers versus putting something together that wouldn't make me sweat profusely. I'm inspired, as always, by maxi dress layering looks from Pinterest and Instagram. Here are the ideas swirling around in my brain.

Do you ever want to wear a chunky sweater, socks and boots with nothing else? Perfectly acceptable for lounging minus the boots. Add a maxi dress and you can be as mobile or immobile as you please. Pants? Who needs pants? This floral maxi dress from Reformation is so translucent I usually wear it as a nightgown to feel fancy and strut around the house while it unfurls behind me. For cooler weather, layer wisely and you can take your maxi anywhere you want to go. This outfit meshed perfectly with the weather and vibe I was going for. I'm sure it is not 60 degrees in Ireland or Scotland right now but that was my inspiration. The weather, overcast and windy, was perfect for getting maximum air to show off the billowing dress.

I added some braids since my hair was going to whip around my face furiously otherwise. While this might look super editorial and not conducive to wearing to the grocery store I can attest if you aren't reaching up too high you should be fine. Another hack for this is wearing leggings or shorts underneath to ward off potential panic attacks due to over exposure in public. Since I wasn't going anywhere, just being blown away outside, I didn't bother.

Me and the Canadian tux are already BFF's but adding a maxi dress seemed like a twist begging to be done. This is another trend which is easy to incorporate into your wardrobe. It doesn't have to be a full on maxi dress either. This ruffled wrap dress from & Other Stories was made for layering any way you want. Adding a maxi dress is a great way to play with the tomboy vibes that usually accompany a double denim look. I decided to double down on the flowers with floral mules and my delightfully mismatched Roxanne Assoulin earrings for color pops as far as the eye can see.

The only qualm about maxi dresses on windy days is doors. Make sure you don't get caught in a door or your magical maxi experience will be cut short with a rip and a tear. I might have a few more maxi dress outfits for the winter banging around inside my head so see if they escape in the future.
