Reformation Redux: Floral Maxi Dress

One of the first brands I heard about that combined fashion and sustainability was Reformation. I own several pieces and can't wait to see what they put out next. Dresses are their specialty, mostly thigh grazing ones, and I've indulged in a few but have coveted many more. When their sale frenzy rolls around I try not to over indulge but buy more than I need to. I don't like spending too much time or money on pieces that will only be worn a couple of times. Versatility is what I want.

The dress I’m remixing today is a Reformation sheer button up floral maxi dress with a matching translucent millennial pink slip that I bought on sale a couple of years ago. I mostly wear it lounging around the house because I was stumped how else to style it. But I was determined to wear it outside the house because: it's a great color and print that's easy to mix with my mostly minimal and neutral clothes and sheer pieces can be layered to make them look less, or more, risqué and suitable to running to the grocery store or hanging out.

So I've challenged myself to wear and pair these two pieces in unconventional ways. These are all warm weather friendly outfits since the summer sun is currently scorching us down in Texas. I've mixed these outfits with a peppering of some of my favorite vintage accessories. None of these outfits are hard and fast rules so you do you.

The No Brainer's

Reformation Maxi Dress + Material Girl Black Dress + Melt Goods Choker + Vintage Sunnies

Mini dress + Sheer maxi dress

This is a pretty easy choice depending on how much leg you like to show. Dress it up or down with your favorite shoes or swap out the mini dress for a body suit. Very festival chic. Feel free to spin around in a field and pretend it's a really indie festival only you and some very well connected cows know about.

Sheer maxi dress + Go to outfit

The another easy choice is a robe over an already established uniform. I mixed it up by putting a white tee over the dress to confuse the masses. Where did this flowing fabric that looks like dress come from? Let their imaginations run wild. Leave partially buttoned or completely unbuttoned for maximum fabric flowing behind you. Wind speed is a crucial factor when deciding to wear this outfit. Floral tornado, anyone?

Swimsuit + Sheer maxi dress

A stylish swimsuit cover up that covers nothing. Genius. Another way to flaunt that long dress appeal wafting in the breeze behind you. Feel like a model on your next jaunt to the beach or pool. Try not to trail into pools or other unwanted liquids on the ground.

For the Daring

Reformation Slip Dress + Madewell Shorts + Vintage Belt

Slip + High waist shorts + Skin tone bra

Feel free to go all out or classy with this depending on the weather and occasion. Cover up shirt recommended for when you are about to experience temperature fluctuations of the great outdoors to the AC laden building. Go for pasties when you are feeling sassy, going to an outdoor concert or not going to a baby shower, at least not a fun one. This can easily work with high waist pants or skirts too.

Sheer maxi dress + Slip + Skin tone or Dark undergarments

Go bold wearing the maxi dress and slip as is or pair with a different slip that's slightly less see through. I added a vintage golden chain to up the decadence factor. Perfect for blending in at a tea party surrounded by doilies, lounging around the house or a metal concert to stand out by pretending to be a delicate flower. No one will expect you to jump in the mosh pit. A healthy dose of not caring helps.

To me this screams 90’s grunge costume starter pack. Just add Docs, choker, attitude and some smeary black eye liner and you are done. I could also see this being worn to a beach wedding with bare feet and a braid also. Ethereal with a hint of sexy. Make sure you didn't used to date the bride or groom because their future spouse will think you are trying to steal them away.

I hope to start wearing these pieces more and not relegate them to the back of my dresser to be forgotten again, Texas weather notwithstanding.
