What to Wear on Your Period In the Summer

What to Wear on Your Period In the Summer

The summer has ended now for most of us but I had a revelation and I wanted to broadcast it to women everywhere dealing with period outfit woes in the heat of summer. So as the last wisp of summer caresses your cheek before disappearing this year I've discovered the secret to being comfortable and chic on your period.

The wardrobe workhorse. The champion of versatility. The dress that is in most of our closets and on every list for what adult women should own.

Even on a good day it can be ridiculously frustrating to maddeningly difficult to pick out an outfit for the day. Add in applicable period woes (cramps, aches, bloating, hot flashes, etc) and finding an outfit that is comfortable and flattering seems like a pipe dream. Making things even more fun is the summer sun exacerbating all these little annoyances by being hot as hell. So what do you wear when it's hot and you're on your period? Its been hiding in front of my eyes for so long I wasn't sure it was possible.

The little black dress. Is there anything it can't do?

My little black dress of choice above is loose fitting, on the shorter side and sleeveless. This means I won't get hot or be anxious about my belly poking out if I was wearing shorts or pants. No waistband which means no restrictions around commonly bloated areas. And finally the most practical reason the color is black, the most leak resistant color there is. It seems obvious but needed to be said. Other dresses like wrap dresses and skirts could work as long as they are comfortable for you. I can’t have anything restrictive around my waist so my normally beloved high waist skirts are out.

Another perk to this outfit is this style and silhouette should be fairly size inclusive and probably in your closet. I haven't searched exhaustively on the internet for sizing but I think it's a safe bet. Feel free to modify this look and outfit based on your own personal period woes and outfit preferences. I used to never get back pain but now start feeling lower back aches the week before mine. Fun period frustrations shake it up so you never know what to expect.

Another plus for me is I can wear this outfit to work or on the weekends. This is because of the fabric having a jersey like feel with plenty of stretch while being opaque. My office is pretty lax when it comes to the dress code so I can wear basically anything that isn't a tube top or shorts, which conversely makes me want to wear these for some reason? I have another black dress that almost fits the bill for this challenge. My black slip dress from Reformation is a little on the shorter side so I would have to save that for weekends and lounging around the house.

This also assumes you like or own any black dresses. I know there are many types of comfortable flattering pants you can wear, or shorts if you are able to rock those, that would work just as well. I have one pair of wide leg black pants which are great for the summer because they are so breathable. The only problem is they are a little tight in the waist so pulling them on and off is tricky when I’m not on my period so they wouldn't work for me during that time of the month.

It's ironic I figured this out at the very end of summer but now I will know for future summers. Little black dresses. A go to outfit for special occasions and our periods. Rejoice!
