Becoming a Mermaid with Captain Blankenship
I've dabbled in many different face and eye masks with a chemical peel thrown in for good measure since September of last year. You would think the novelty of covering my face with new concoctions would have worn off by now. Lucky for me, and these brands, I'm not tired of smearing new potions on my face. Put that down as something I never thought I would say or write. My first mask to lead me down the beauty rabbit hole was from Skinesque in the Rachel Zoe Fall Box of Style last year.
Previously, I was on the fence debating whether face masks did anything or just forced you to relax so it wouldn't slide off your face. Before all this new face mask technology, the last ones I dealt with were from junior high where you rubbed on a thin clear layer and then peeled it off usually at a slumber party. It was one of many activities we participated in that hardly altered our appearance while watching movies and parroting rude jokes. These masks never seemed to do anything so I inferred all masks were like this. Not True. While I love my Skinesque masks for their awesome exfoliation and hydration, I wanted to try something new. Most sheet masks are focused purely on hydrating and plumping your face with chemical goodies but I wanted something more suited for my summer time oil slicked face.

Enter the Captain Blankenship Mermaid Detox Face Mask. I was predisposed to like it because one thing I'm always striving to do is become more of a mermaid. The closest I came was working as a lifeguard during the summer and getting ridiculously tan while being around water all the time. I was basically a mermaid with a summer job. My hair was auburn red so more toned down than Ariel so I almost embodied the Disney version for those two summers. Now I try to stay out of the sun as much as possible and rarely get close to what most people consider tan.
Another thing I crave during the summer only is my hair texture when it's been soaked in salt water, usually from a pool, and looks naturally wavy and undone aka mermaid hair. I never thought of buying salt water spray because it seems so easy to DIY even though I never get around to doing it. So instead of experimenting with salt, water and oils I bought the Captain Blankenship Mermaid Sea Salt Hair Spray. All mermaid everything all the time!
My mermaid package arrived promptly and I proceeded to play with all the mermaid concoctions that night. Obvious statement alert: ingredients are important in anything we consume or put on our bodies. In both of these mermaid products the ingredients are obvious, plainly stated and won't irritate your skin. While reevaluating my skin care routine I found one irritating ingredient in my face powders and didn't want to add any more to the mix.
The detox mask is super green and smells earthy in a good way. I imagine this is what green smoothie powders smell like. Is this edible? Maybe. Since I tend to get more oily in the summer I decided to try adding a clay mask to my routine. It seemed like a gentler alternative to the constant exfoliation I am trying to get away from. As with most products that perform the magic they claim, my skin felt soft immediately after. I would have to wait until the next day to see if any of my budding face friends would leave or stick around. Most of them dried out or receded which was thrilling. Finally a way to get rid of pimples besides popping or excessive exfoliation. Hooray!
The sea salt hair spray smells delicious even though I probably shouldn't spray it in my mouth. To try it out, I braided my hair and sprayed the braid. I let this marinate overnight and looked much more mermaid like in the morning. I like using this on a few days old “dirty hair” since this is when my hair has lost some of the original wave. It's like a reset button but without a shower which is a win for me.
If you are looking for a clay face mask that won't irritate your skin and you run more on the oily side I definitely recommend the Mermaid Detox Face Mask. Also if you are like me and want more mermaid hair without running to the beach or nearest salt water pool the salt water hair spray is also pretty good. I might never go to the beach again at least for my hair.
