Scarves, Bodysuits and Turtlenecks: How to Keep Warm In Winter

Scarves, Bodysuits and Turtlenecks: How to Keep Warm In Winter

Texas has winters though it is rarely, actually cold here. The type of winter I'm used to is having the opportunity to wear shorts or t-shirts randomly in January or February. I distinctly remembering washing my car on winter break and getting a sun burn. No Northern can relate.

This December, for unknown reasons, we are having something much similar to a “real” winter in Texas. I'm not here for it. I need a break from the monotonous cold. So I dive into my closet filled with cozy fabrics and layer my heart out. I've tricked my brain into making this a fun game every morning; getting dressed without grabbing the same thing over and over, sweater, leggings, boots, which are fine in moderation but start to bore eventually.

My not so secret formula for optimal outfit warmth needs to consist of a scarf, turtleneck or bodysuit to keep me cozy and pleasant. Follow along for some outfit recipes.

My latest insights aren't Earth shattering or unknown to most but for those who need it; you're welcome. For me, some parts of my body need to be covered when it’s cold and others hardly warrant concern. My ears and ankles can take some chill but apparently my neck cannot. My neck has zero chill. It needs to be swathed in some kind of fabric or else all my other layers might as well be non existent.

I thought my outfit was pretty warm but apparently not enough for my naked neck who can’t handle a chilly breeze accompanied by overcast skies. A scarf was hiding in the back of my car and I threw it on during lunch because the grey sky wasn't going to open up and become sunshine any time soon. My neck was wrapped and the pervasive chill haunting my body at the office disappeared. Magic!

Another item I didn't realize was unintentionally cozy; the long sleeved bodysuit! Perfect for layering or wearing solo my favorite / only one, is from Madewell and I've worn it everywhere. To Portland on my solo adventure, layered with a turtleneck underneath at work and going to dinner at Reata on my first anniversary with lots of black.

I love a versatile wardrobe item and my bodysuit is really stepping it up this year. I also ordered a blue velvet bodysuit from J Crew on super sale and am eagerly awaiting its arrival for more festive bodysuit outfits. Happy Solstice!
